Dermal Fillers – What are they?

Dermal Fillers – What are they?

The term ‘dermal fillers’ can sound a bit scary for some but our registered prescribing nurse will be able to explain how it works.  They are a safe product which have a temporary effect on the skin.  Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to help plump it out, with the aim of reducing the appearance of wrinkles, lines and folds in the skin and keeping those first signs of ageing at bay.

As a dermal filler is a substance which is injected into the skin, many people will want to know exactly what it is made of.  Dermal fillers are a substance called Hyaluronic acid – something which occurs naturally in the skin anyway – but natural production decreases over time, leading to creases and wrinkles.  The hyaluronic acid is suspended in a gel substance to make it easier to use.

Why would you need dermal fillers? The skin has underlying tissue which is naturally plumper the younger that you are.  It gives you a youthful look, but over time this tissue can begin to break down.  This is the process which leads to those unwanted fine lines, laughter lines and those deep creases which can make you look ageing.  These usually occur in areas where there is more movement in the face.  Dermal fillers are a way of correcting this natural process and help hold back the signs of ageing.

Dermal Fillers – are there other uses other than anti-ageing?

In addition to helping reduce some of the obvious signs of ageing, we can use dermal fillers to add volume and deal with areas of the face that have begun to look a little ‘sunken’.  You might want to consider having fillers to add volume to areas such as the lips, or to lift the cheekbones for better definition.  It should be noted that this type of treatment can be suitable for people of most ages and skin types but if you have any concerns, we can help you to resolve them in your free consultation.

Dermal fillers do not come in just one format and we will work with you to make sure that the right one is chosen for you. Different areas of the face require different volumes of the product and the results achieved will vary, with some people noticing a difference for up to 18 months while others may need to have a further treatment after around 6 months. You may also notice that if you have treatments on a regular basis the period of effectiveness becomes longer over time as the effects will accumulate.

It is important to make the right decision for you and get all the information that you need before you go ahead with treatment.  Our treatment does not take a long time to complete and the effects can have a life changing effect.  Having dermal fillers is not a decision to be taken lightly but we are here to support and guide you.
